10TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON FAST
IGNITION OF FUSION TARGETS
June 12th – 18th 2008.
Creta Maris Conference Center
Hersonissos, Crete, Greece
The fast ignitor workshop series has played an important role in
the rapid progress in the physics of fast ignition inertial fusion
world-wide. It provides a forum for discussion on important topics
in high intensity laser-plasma physics that are relevant to fast
ignition and allows new experimental and theoretical results to
be presented in an informal and collegiate atmosphere.
With the new laser facilities in the United States and Japan nearing
completion – and the start of the HIPER project in the European
Union – this workshop provides an opportunity of sharing ideas,
forming new collaborations and maintaining the rapid progress in
the field.
The International Committee for Fast Ignition, at its meeting this
September in Kobe, Japan, agreed to hold the Workshop every two
years, alternating between IFSA conferences and rotating geographically
between the EU, Asia and the United States.
This Workshop is being held as a satellite meeting to the 35th EPS
Conference on Plasma Physics and will be held in the Creta
Maris Conference Center on the beautiful island of Crete.
The first two days, 12th –13th June, will be devoted to the
presentation of latest results. The weekend will be free for relaxation.
The remaining days, 16th –18th June, will be a held as a smaller
stand-alone meeting and devoted to more informal discussion and
debates, more conducive to the Workshop style.
Registration, abstract
submissions and hotel reservations
will be made through the EPS website.

Satellite meeting
of the 35th EPS Plasma Physics Conference
The workshop is an annual forum of the scientific community
to discuss specific topics more in detail after the EPS conference. The aim
is to stimulate better interaction between the experimental and theoretical
communities in these topics.
The conference will take place on 16-17 June 2008
in Hersonissos, Crete at the Albatros Hotel.

Presentations
Oral presentations are envisaged. Separate sections
are foreseen in Diagnostics, Simulations and Fluctuation Studies among others.
A section will consist of an invited talk, several 20 minute oral contributions,
summary and a round table discussion.
Social
Programme
Informal dinner is planned at the end of the first day
to strengthen current and encourage possible future collaborations. The dinner
is voluntary and will be held in one of the traditional greek restaurants
of the island, but will bond with the czech-hungarian heritage of this workshop
series as well.
Proceedings
Refereed contributions will be published in Plasma Physics
Reports (Journals homepage: http://www.springerlink.com/content/1562-6938/).
The papers should be prepaered in Word or TeX format. Templates can be found online on the workshop’s or the
journals’ homepage.
Please send the paper and a signed copyright agreement
form to eftsomp2008@rmki.kfki.hu. The copyrigth
agreement forms will be sent to each registered participant, but can also
be found online on the workshop’s homepage.

Fuelling of Magnetic Confinement Machines
Satellite Workshop of the 35th EPS Plasma Physics
Conference
16-17 June, 2008, Hersonissos, Crete, Greece
Scope
Pellet injection is mandatory for fueling ITER beyond the pedestal
but, in addition to this requirement of maintaining the DT content
of burning plasmas, it is increasingly used as a mean of discharge
control. Some of the domains in which it is involved are: (1) the
attenuation of ELMs by injection of shallow pellets, (2) the achievement
of high core densities and peaked profiles by decoupling the core
and edge parameters by deep core fuelling and (3) the triggering
of internal transport barriers due to nearly central matter deposition.
Determining the ability of the above mentioned techniques to be
extrapolated to a device significantly larger than present day tokamaks
is a major question for the research in the field. In addition to
comparing predictions of present day models to ITER conditions,
main points to be discussed cover both the theoretical and experimental
aspects of the domain, as:
a comprehensive understanding of the physics of the gradB-induced
drift; the characterization of its scaling with plasmas and devices
parameters; the determination of the influence of ELM control by
shallow pellet injection on the confinement.
The reliability and accuracy of predictive analyses and the corresponding
computational models are to be discussed.
Alternative methods for discharge control such as the injection
of supersonic gas jets shall also be discussed.
Presentations: Oral presentations on experiments,
theory and modelling, are envisaged.
Venue: The Workshop will be held at Hotel KNOSSOS
ROYAL VILLAGE Hersonissos Crete, Greece. This hotel is one of
the official hotels for the EPS2008 Conference.
